How to Seed Tomato ‘Black Prince’ (Solanum lycopersicum)
-
When to Sow: Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost date. In warm climates, they can also be sown outdoors once the soil is warm.
-
Soil: Use a light, fertile, well-drained seed-starting mix enriched with compost.
-
Sowing: Sow seeds about 0.5 cm deep in pots or trays.
-
Watering: Keep soil moist but not soggy. Mist gently to avoid displacing seeds.
-
Germination: Seeds sprout in 7–14 days at 20–25 °C.
-
Transplanting: When seedlings have 2–3 sets of true leaves, transplant into larger pots. Plant deeply, covering part of the stem to encourage strong roots.
-
Final Planting: After frost has passed, harden off seedlings and transplant outdoors, spacing plants 60–90 cm apart in full sun.
-
Care: Provide stakes or cages for support. Water regularly at the base, feed with tomato fertilizer, and remove side shoots for stronger growth.
-
Harvesting: Pick fruits when they ripen to a rich deep reddish-brown color with a sweet, complex flavor.
✨ Produces medium-sized, round tomatoes with dark skin and a rich, slightly smoky taste. A prized heirloom variety for fresh eating, salads, and gourmet dishes.
