How to Seed Trailing Lobelia Blue & White (Lobelia pendula)
-
Sowing Time:
Sow seeds indoors from February to April. Transplant outdoors after the danger of frost has passed (usually in May). Lobelia prefers warm conditions and gentle sunlight for germination. -
Sowing Depth:
Do not cover the seeds!
Scatter them on the surface of moist soil or compost and press lightly — light is essential for germination. -
Soil:
Use fine, moist, well-drained compost or potting mix. Lobelia prefers fertile, moisture-retentive soil once established outdoors. -
Light & Temperature:
Place the tray in a bright, warm location with temperatures between 18–22 °C (65–72 °F). Avoid direct strong sunlight. -
Germination Time:
Seeds usually germinate within 14–21 days under warm and bright conditions. -
Transplanting:
When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant in small clumps into trays or pots. Harden off gradually before planting outdoors, spacing 10–15 cm apart. -
Growing Tips:
-
Water regularly; Lobelia enjoys evenly moist soil.
-
Choose a sunny or lightly shaded position.
-
Perfect for hanging baskets, window boxes, and borders.
-
The “Blue & White” variety produces masses of tiny blue and white flowers that create a beautiful cascading effect all summer.
