Tulip ‘Helmar’ is a striking Triumph tulip known for its bright primrose-yellow, cup-shaped flowers dramatically marked with raspberry-red to deep red flames and streaks. The sturdy stems reach approximately 45 cm and make it useful for borders, containers and cut flowers. It is also an RHS Award of Garden Merit cultivar.

Because tulips naturally prefer a cool winter followed by a mild spring, growing ‘Helmar’ in the Gulf requires extra attention to pre-chilling, planting time and drainage.

🌱 Best Planting Time in the Gulf

• Gulf region: October–January
• Kuwait: November–December
• Best period: November–December
• Avoid planting during the hottest months.
• In warm Gulf climates, use pre-chilled bulbs to provide the cold period normally supplied by winter.

Tulip bulbs require a period of cold to develop properly for flowering; ‘Helmar’ is therefore more challenging in warm-winter climates than in temperate regions.

❄️ Pre-Chilling the Bulbs

For the Gulf, pre-chilling is strongly recommended.

• Chill healthy, dry bulbs for approximately 8–12 weeks before planting.
• Keep them in a cool, dry, ventilated refrigerator area.
• Keep bulbs away from apples, bananas and other ripening fruit because ethylene can interfere with bulbs.
• Do not freeze the bulbs.
• Do not allow them to become wet or moldy.
• Plant immediately after the chilling period.

🌿 How to Plant the Bulbs

1. Choose a location with excellent drainage.
2. Select a position receiving full morning sun or bright sunlight.
3. Loosen the soil to approximately 20–25 cm deep.
4. Mix in mature compost if the soil is poor.
5. Place each bulb with the pointed end facing upward.
6. Plant approximately 10–15 cm deep, or around 2–3 times the bulb's height. RHS specifically recommends 10–15 cm for ‘Helmar’.
7. Space bulbs approximately 10–15 cm apart.
8. Cover completely with soil.
9. Water lightly after planting if the soil is dry.
10. Do not keep the planting area continuously wet.

☀️ Sunlight

• Full sun is ideal.
• In the Gulf, morning sun with some protection from intense afternoon heat can be beneficial.
• Choose a location protected from strong winds because the flower stems can reach around 45 cm.
• Containers can be positioned where they receive good winter sunlight but can be moved away from extreme heat.

‘Helmar’ performs best in full sun and well-drained soil.

💧 Watering

• Water lightly after planting if the soil is dry.
• During active growth, keep the soil lightly and evenly moist, but never waterlogged.
• Allow excess water to drain completely.
• Reduce watering after flowering as the foliage begins to yellow.
• During the Gulf summer dormancy, keep the bulbs relatively dry.

Good drainage is particularly important because wet conditions can cause bulb rot.

🌱 Soil

Tulip ‘Helmar’ prefers:

• Fertile soil
• Loose soil structure
• Excellent drainage
• Neutral to slightly alkaline conditions are suitable
• Good organic matter without excessive moisture retention

For containers, a useful mixture is:

• 50–60% quality potting soil
• 20–30% mature compost
• 20–30% perlite, pumice or coarse grit

Avoid poorly drained, heavy soil and fresh manure or poorly decomposed compost around the bulbs.

🌿 Fertilizing

• Use a bulb fertilizer or balanced fertilizer at planting if needed.
• During active spring growth, a higher-potassium fertilizer can support flowering.
• Avoid excessive nitrogen.
• Keep fertilizer away from direct contact with the bulb.

RHS guidance for ‘Helmar’ recommends high-potash feeding during active spring growth until the foliage begins to die back.

🌺 Flowering

‘Helmar’ produces a spectacular two-tone display of yellow flowers with red flames and streaks.

Under suitable conditions, it flowers in mid to late spring. In the Gulf, flowering time can vary considerably depending on the amount of chilling received and winter temperatures.

The flowers are also excellent for cut-flower arrangements because of their sturdy stems and good vase life.

🌿 After Flowering

• Remove faded flower heads.
• Do not cut the green leaves immediately.
• Allow the foliage to naturally turn yellow and die back.
• The leaves help replenish the bulb for the next season.
• Once the foliage has completely dried, reduce watering and allow the bulb to enter dormancy.
• In the Gulf, lifting and storing the bulbs in a cool, dry, ventilated place can be practical for reuse.

RHS recommends allowing the foliage to die naturally and notes that the bulbs can be lifted, dried and stored for replanting.

🪴 Growing in Containers

‘Helmar’ is well suited to container growing.

Use:

• A deep container with excellent drainage holes
• Free-draining potting mix
• Several bulbs planted together for a stronger display
• A sunny winter position
• Protection from extreme Gulf summer heat

Container growing is particularly useful in the Gulf because you can control drainage and move the pots when temperatures become extreme.
