Sugar Baby Watermelon is a compact, early-maturing watermelon variety that performs well in hot climates when given plenty of sunlight, warm soil, adequate water, and sufficient space for its vines. In the Gulf, timing is especially important: avoid the extreme summer heat and grow it during the warm spring or autumn window.

🌱 Best Growing Season

• Best sowing time in the Gulf: February–March.
• A second growing window is possible around September–October as temperatures begin to fall.
• In Kuwait and the hottest Gulf areas, February–March is generally the safest outdoor period.
• Avoid: June–August and periods of extreme heat.
• Ideal soil temperature for germination: approximately 21–30°C.

🌿 Seed Sowing

1. Choose a location with full sun and excellent drainage.
2. Watermelon grows best in fertile, sandy-loam soil enriched with compost.
3. Sow seeds approximately 2–3 cm deep.
4. Plant 2–3 seeds per planting spot initially.
5. Once seedlings develop several true leaves, keep the strongest plant and remove the weaker ones.
6. Allow approximately 90–120 cm between plants and at least 150–200 cm between rows because the vines spread considerably.

• Fertilizing: Incorporate compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting. Use a balanced fertilizer during early growth, then favor a fertilizer with adequate potassium during flowering and fruit development.
• Keep weeds away from the young plants.
• Provide plenty of space for vines to spread, or train them along a suitable support if desired.

• Watermelon produces separate male and female flowers.
• Good bee activity and pollination are important for fruit formation.
• Avoid spraying insecticides on flowering plants when bees are active.
• Once fruits begin developing, place straw, a board, or another clean dry surface beneath the fruit to reduce direct contact with wet soil.
• Sugar Baby is a relatively compact watermelon, but its vines still require considerable space.

🍉 Harvest

• Sugar Baby generally matures in approximately 70–85 days from sowing, depending on temperature and growing conditions.
• Look for several maturity signs:
  • The tendril closest to the fruit begins to dry.
  • The underside of the watermelon changes from bright green to creamy or yellowish.
  • The fruit develops a duller appearance rather than a very shiny surface.
  • The stem begins to dry.
• Avoid relying only on the sound produced when tapping the fruit.

• February–March is particularly suitable in Kuwait and other extremely hot Gulf regions.
• In autumn, sow around September–October when temperatures begin to decline.
