1. Environment and Climate Control

The key to success in the Gulf area is managing intense heat and maintaining specific environmental conditions.
  • Light: Provide bright, indirect light. Avoid harsh midday sun, which can scorch the delicate leaves. A slightly shaded east-facing window or 50-60% shade netting outdoors is ideal.
  • Temperature: Maintain day temperatures between 24°C to 29°C (75°F to 85°F). Ensure a slight night-time temperature drop (around 6°C or 10°F) to promote stronger growth and potential flowering.
  • Humidity: Aim for high humidity, around 60% to 80%. In a dry climate, use a humidity tray, a room humidifier, or mist the plants frequently (especially in the morning).
  • Air Circulation: Excellent air circulation is crucial, especially with high humidity, to prevent fungal diseases.
2. Potting and Media
  • Potting/Mounting: These orchids are epiphytes (grow on trees) and their roots need air exposure. They grow well mounted on cork bark or in shallow, slatted baskets. The roots often "hover" above the medium, which is normal and prevents rot.
  • Medium: Use a very coarse, fast-draining mix (fir bark, perlite, charcoal, or coconut husk/fiber) to ensure the roots dry quickly after watering. Avoid standard soil.
3. Watering and Feeding
  • Watering: Bulbophyllum species dislike drying out completely. Water thoroughly and frequently, often daily during very hot weather, ensuring water runs completely through the pot. Maintain constant moisture in the medium without letting the plant sit in stagnant water.
  • Fertilizing: During the active growing season, feed with a balanced, water-soluble orchid fertilizer (e.g., 20-20-20 NPK) diluted to half or quarter strength every week or every other watering. Flush occasionally with plain water to prevent salt buildup.
