1. Environment and Climate Control

Managing high heat and maintaining specific humidity is essential for success in the Gulf region.
  • Light: Provide bright, indirect light. An east-facing window is ideal, or use about 50-60% shade netting outdoors to protect plants from harsh midday sun which causes scorching.
  • Temperature: Maintain day temperatures between 24°C to 29°C (75°F to 85°F), with a distinct night-time drop of around 6°C (10°F) to promote blooming. Protect from extreme heat above 32°C (90°F).
  • Humidity: Aim for high humidity, between 60% and 80%. Use a humidity tray (a tray with pebbles and water) or mist the plants frequently, especially in dry, hot conditions.
  • Air Circulation: Ensure robust airflow to prevent fungal diseases, which are common in high-humidity environments.
2. Potting and Media
  • Potting/Mounting: These orchids are epiphytes (grow on trees) and their roots need air exposure. They grow best when mounted on cork bark or grown in small, slatted baskets.
  • Medium: If potting in a container, use a very coarse, fast-draining orchid mix (large pieces of fir bark, charcoal, perlite, and/or coconut husk). Avoid regular soil, which retains too much moisture.
3. Watering and Feeding
  • Watering: Water thoroughly in the morning during the active growing season (spring to autumn), allowing the medium to dry out quickly between waterings. Reduce watering significantly during the winter rest period to prevent the canes from shriveling excessively.
  • Water Quality: Use rainwater or filtered water if tap water is high in mineral salts or chlorine.
  • Fertilizing: During the active growing season, feed with a balanced, water-soluble orchid fertilizer (e.g., 20-20-20 NPK) diluted to half strength every 1 to 2 weeks. Withhold fertilizer completely during the winter rest period.
